Volunteers

Cummings Grants Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of Cummings Foundation's grant program. By tapping into the deep expertise and rich diversity of greater Boston's professional community, the Foundation is so much better able to understand the issues local communities are facing, identify the most promising and effective nonprofits to fund, and strengthen relationships with beneficiaries.

Past and current volunteers include several local mayors, a former White House staffer, a retired justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, former state legislators, CEOs, a noted Boston Globe reporter, a renowned cardiologist, and college presidents, among many other Boston-area professionals and distinguished citizens.

A team of 80 volunteers determines at least half the grants awarded each year. Many more volunteers generously give their time to conduct site visits with grant winners. As a token of thanks for the time and significant thought they dedicate to Cummings Foundation, all volunteers are invited to participate in the Cummings Community Giving program, which allows them to select a local nonprofit to receive a $1,000 contribution from Cummings Properties.

Grant Cycle Committees

Sustaining Grant recipients

Site Visits volunteer Aliesha Porcena (right) with grantee Kayla Hamlett Murray, executive director, Bethel Institute for Community Development (left).

The Site Visits Committee conducts in-person site visits with nonprofits every year of a 10-year grant and during the final two years of shorter-term grants. These volunteers help develop and maintain long-term relationships, keep the Foundation abreast of important developments at these organizations, allocate additional funding, and help inform decisions about future grants. Site visits take place between January and August. Each volunteer conducts at least 10 visits (with a fellow volunteer) and completes a brief report after each one. This committee is broken down into subcommittees that are based on geography and led by volunteer chairpersons. Sample Site Visits Committee Guide

The LOI Committee evaluates letters of inquiry and decides which of the 600 or so applicants will be invited to the full application stage. This committee is active for a four-week period from late September to late October. Volunteers are divided into pairs, with each pair independently evaluating the same set of LOIs and then meeting to compare notes and finalize a jointly agreed upon list of nonprofits to invite to submit a full application. Sample LOI Committee Guide

The Application Review Committee is active for a seven-week period during January and February to review full applications and determine which applicants will advance to the Final Grant Selection Committee. Volunteers are divided into trios, with each trio independently evaluating the same set of applications and then meeting to compare notes and finalize a jointly agreed upon list of nonprofits to advance in the process. One member of each trio will have strong financial acumen and will evaluate each applicant’s financial health by reviewing Form 990s. Sample Application Review Committee Guide

The Final Grant Selection Committee is active for a four-week period during March and April to review the finalists' applications and determine which applicants will receive funding. Volunteers work in teams of four, with each volunteer independently evaluating the same set of 15 applications and then meeting to compare notes and finalize a jointly agreed upon list of at least seven nonprofits to receive a grant. Volunteers typically serve on this committee for three years before rotating off and sometimes serving on a different committee. Sample Final Grant Selection Committee Guide

The 10-Year Committee is active for one week during early May, and each committee member may volunteer for one or more eight-hour days during that time. Volunteers evaluate the repeat grant winners during on-site Presentation Days. In preparation, they independently review applications, plus any site visit reports and the most recent impact report, for their applicants. After hearing a presentation and having an opportunity to ask questions, the volunteers determine which grant winners will receive long-term funding. Members of other committees may elect to also serve on this committee. Sample 10-Year Committee Guide

Cummings Coaches provides grant-writing support and proposal development mentorship to a limited number of small nonprofits during the letter of inquiry (July - September) and full application (November - December) phases of the Cummings $30 Million Grant Program. The coaches are community volunteers who have previously served on a Cummings grant selection committee and are very familiar with both the Foundation and its selection process. Coaches are paired with one or more eligible nonprofit applicants (more here) and commit at least two hours of meeting time, which can be broken up over multiple meetings. It is up to each coach and nonprofit pair to determine when, where, and for how long to meet. Sample Cummings Coaches Guide

The Impact Report Committee is active during a five-week period in April and May. Impact reports are submitted annually by each grantee. Reports describe how that year’s grant funds were used and detail any variances or challenges. Volunteers review the impact reports and share any circumstances requiring follow-up with Foundation staff. Sample Impact Report Committee Guide
